Hot tub and spa wiring is one of those specialty items where I see the most code violations. Get it wrong and someone gets electrocuted. Article 680 is specific and non-negotiable.
Required: a 240V, 50A (or 60A depending on the unit - read the nameplate) dedicated circuit with a GFCI-protected disconnect located at least 5 feet from the spa, within sight of the spa, and between 5 and 50 feet from it. The disconnect must disconnect all ungrounded conductors. Equipment bonding is required - all metal within 5 feet of the spa must be bonded together and to the equipment grounding conductor. This includes metal water pipe, metal conduit, the equipment itself, and even metal handrails or ladders.
No receptacles within 6 feet of the spa. Between 6 and 10 feet, any receptacle must be GFCI protected. Luminaires (light fixtures) within 5 feet of the inside wall of the spa are prohibited unless they’re wet location rated and mounted at the right height. This is not a job to eyeball - read the article, read the hot tub installation manual, and pull the permit.
