Accounting software is one of those things you put off until tax time and then hate yourself. Get it set up early and keep it current. QuickBooks Online is the most common choice for small electrical contractors: your bookkeeper and accountant can access it remotely, it integrates with everything, and it’s well-understood by accounting professionals.
Alternatives worth considering: FreshBooks is simpler and cheaper, great for sole proprietors or very small shops. Wave is free and good for startups. For construction/contractor-specific features, Foundation Software and Contractor Foreman have more robust job costing and WIP accounting.
The key feature for electricians: job costing. You need to track labor and material costs per job and compare them to your estimate. If you estimated 10 hours on a panel replacement and it took 14, you need to know that so you can re-examine your pricing. Most guys don’t track actuals vs estimates, and then they wonder why they’re busy all the time but never have money.
