The 2023 NEC dropped a lot of changes that are going to affect your day-to-day work, and not all of them are obvious from the headlines. The biggest ones: 210.8 expanded GFCI protection to basically every 125V-250V outlet in commercial occupancies, AFCI requirements got extended again, and there are new rules around EV charging circuits that are going to catch people off guard. Article 230 got reworked for services, and if you’re doing any solar work, Article 705 has changes that’ll affect your interconnection calculations.
The one that’s biting people in the field right now is the updated definition of “dwelling unit” in Article 100 - it has downstream effects on which articles apply to your job. ADUs, garage apartments, mother-in-law suites - inspectors are starting to interpret these differently depending on the jurisdiction. If you’re working in a state that’s adopted 2023, get familiar with that definition change before it bites you on a rough-in inspection.
I’ll break down the major changes article by article below. Add your own in the replies - especially if your AHJ is interpreting something in a weird way locally.
